Moving/Customs in Shenzhen

I have spoken to friends about moving in to Mainland China and have heard horror stories of hig customs taxes, missign personal effects, etc. My wife and I will be moving in September 2011 to Shenzhen and wondering what difficulties we will face moving our household (clothes, kitchen appliances, etc - no furniture) to Shenzhen.
