Shenzhen is different

I have been in Shenzhen one and a half months. It is totally different from what I thought it should be. In my mind, there should be skyscrapers everywhere. But it turns out not. The skyscrapers mainly locate in Huaqiang North. When I stand between the skyscrapers, I can only see a small dot of the sky. It makes me feel like a frog in a well. But it is really awesome. There is a big electronic market in the downtown, i.e. Huangqiang North. You can see people from everywhere. There are also many foreigners here. Shenzhen is really a great platform for communication. It is easy to meet people from different cultures. Maybe it is easy to find an American to practice your poor English with. But we should know that is wrong.

Firemen rescue people in a raft on a flooded street in Buji Subdistrict, Longgang District, Shenzhen, on Thursday. The heavy rain caused serious traffic jams and flooded some lowland areas in the city. More than 600 stranded people in Henggang in Longgang District were relocated during the rain. The city recorded 50-80 millimeters of rainfall in Bao’an and Longgang districts and the heaviest rain of 87 millimeters was in Songgang, Bao’an District. The local meteorological observatory said there will be heavy rain Friday.

5-6 typhoons to affect city

SHENZHEN Meteorological Observatory predicts that five to six typhoons will affect the city this year, and two to three will cause serious damage.

At a meeting to discuss disaster relief last week, Wang Yanqing, head of the bureau, said Shenzhen is likely to experience extreme weather this year and there will be typhoons within a 500 kilometer radius of Shenzhen between June and September.

Rainfall will reach between 1,350-1,450 millimeters during the flood season, which started April 6, accounting for 82% of the year’s total rainfall.

Bike rental comes to Metro

SHENZHEN Fanqi Bicycle Rental Service plans to set up 30 rental stations at 15 Metro stops between Caopu and Shuanglong, the elevated section of the Longgang Line, before the end of May.

Residents and commuters can pay a monthly rental fee of 30 yuan (US$4.76) after a 200-yuan deposit for the bikes, which can be folded and kept in lockers at the stations.

The first 10 rental stations will be finished this month. Registered members can also rent bicycles at the company’s leasing outlets in Tian’an Cyber City in Futian District, and Xili and Baishizhou in Nanshan.

Man criticized for keeping son in ICU

THE father of a sick boy has been criticized for not agreeing to remove his child from an intensive care unit (ICU) at Shenzhen Children’s Hospital.

    The child is no longer in critical condition.

    There are only 12 ICU beds for children in Shenzhen and doctors are calling for the boy, Tang Wanjing, to be quickly transferred to an ordinary ward to make room.

    However, Tang’s father is refusing to cooperate and not answering phone calls from the hospital. The hospital’s rules require Tang’s signature before the boy can be transferred.

American anthropologist Mary Ann O’Donnell, who has lived in Shenzhen for more than 10 years, is fancinated by the urban villages on Shenzhen.

In O’Donnell’s opinion, the villages are better designed than the CBD. An anthropologist by training, she prefers the villages to skyscrapers and shopping malls. She also prefers four-lane roads to eight-lane thoroughfares because the four-lane roads usually have avenues for pedestrians.

SZ to open sea tourist route

SHENZHEN transport authority is considering opening a sea tourism route linking Minsk World in Yantian with Shuangyong Port in Nan’ao, Dapeng New Zone this summer.

The sightseeing route will be extended to Sanmen Island in Huizhou City after receiving approval from Huizhou transport authority.

The move, which encourages green commuting, will greatly shorten travel time between Yantian and Nan’ao in the city’s east. It will also help relieve traffic congestion in the area during weekends and holidays.

RECOGNIZING the rapid growth of Shenzhen and the abundance of companies in the Pearl River Delta which do business internationally, Ireland Investment and Development Agency established its South China office in Shenzhen a year ago.

In his trip to the city over the weekend, CEO Barry O’ Leary said he hoped the office would be a bridge for further cooperation between Shenzhen and Ireland. He identified the high-tech, computer games, clean technology, financial services and pharmaceutical industries as being particularly promising.

Shenzhen Daily, Han Ximin reported that "SHENZHEN police will impose traffic restrictions on some roads in the city’s east from today until the end of the Universiade because some competitions will be held in the Dameisha area.
From now until Aug. 23, vehicles will be restricted from entering the Dameisha area, including the neighboring Yihai, Huanmei, Tanmei and Huanbi roads from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The right lane on Yanba Expressway between the Dameisha Tunnel and Dameisha Tollgate will be open only to authorized vehicles.

SHENZHEN temperatures could dip to 12-14 degrees Celsius over the weekend, a drop of about five degrees from recent sunny weather, because of a cold front that could reach the city Friday.

The cold front could bring strong winds and cloudy skies. Some bursts of sunshine are forecast for Saturday and Sunday, though, with temperatures topping out at 19-20 degrees Celsius.

Light, scattered rain also is possible Friday and Saturday. The relative humidity will remain high, at 65-90 percent, and air quality will be good over the weekend.

Bike rental system rolling in Yantian

SHENZHEN’S first government-funded bicycle rental system is on a roll in Yantian District, where residents have used the system’s 3,000 bikes more than 1 million times since the program began in December.

The district’s urban management administration released the bike rental data this week. The system appears to be a success so far — Yantian is expected to increase its number of rental bikes to 5,000 by April 1, the Daily Sunshine reported Thursday.

The rental system includes a management center, service stations and bicycle rental stations.

A doctor said to me, "if you spend more than two hours falling asleep for over a period of weeks, then you may have a sleeping problem." According to Shenzhen hospitals, half of SZ has sleeping problem and it is usually neglected.

SHENZHEN Book City is offering customers two hours of free parking if they spend 50 yuan (US$8) or more on books and stationery in the store, an increase from the company’s previous spending requirement of only 35 yuan. The change became effective March 15.

Purchases in businesses attached to Book City locations in Nanshan, Futian’s CBD and Luohu — such as restaurants and small shops — don’t count toward the parking promotion, according to Shenzhen Publishing and Circulation Group, Book City’s parent company.
