Experienced Mandarin & Cantonese teacher

Exchange Type:

Hello, I am Sullivan, I was born and raised in Shenzhen. I believe myself to be an enthusiastic, patient and tenacious person. I was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Hong Kong Baptist University, and the Advanced certificate of Chinese teachers to foreigners. I have been teaching Mandarin and Cantonese for 8 years. My students are from more than 40 countries and regions around the world.
As an old Chinese saying goes:
“give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day; but if you teach him how to fish, he will eat for a lifetime”.

(“授之以鱼不如授之以渔shòu zhī yǐ yú bú rú shòu zhī yǐ yú”.) This Chinese proverb gives me a strong determination to become a teacher. I have both the will power and passion to work as a Chinese language teacher, which I developed while participating in summer voluntary teaching in Thailand in 2008; this was the first time I taught Chinese to foreigners. I realized that Teaching Chinese as a foreign language is not only to teach the Chinese language, but also to transmit Chinese culture and promote global understanding of China. With the strong communication skills, culture awareness, and insightful views of second language teaching methodology that I have gained, I am conscious of the importance of second language learners’ needs. The aim of every single one of my classes is to create the most efficient language environment for my students, by providing interactive activities, and facilitating plenty of language practice in classes. I have been teaching one-on-one and small group classes for foreigners, including Elementary to Advanced Mandarin, Intermediate Business Mandarin, HSK course, Pronunciation course, Chinese Writing and Cantonese. And I co-wrote the teaching material “Communication Mandarin” textbook one-four. I regard Chinese Teaching as a fantastic pleasure, especially helping my students achieve their goal and to witnessing their progress step by step.
In my spare time, I enjoy playing the piano, photography, travelling, reading and trekking. I am a big fan of travelling. I have been to more than 20 countries and regions, 160 cities around the world. I enjoy learning about the cultures and customs of different countries and sharing my experiences with my students.
