Shenzhen Daily, Li Hao reported that “SHENZHEN’S first government-funded international school opened yesterday.

Located in Nanshan District, the international school is part of Shenzhen Foreign Languages School and covers an area of 24,000 square meters, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

With 147 employees, the school will provide 1,080 places in 54 classes, covering kindergarten, primary and high school.

Each class will have an experienced foreign teacher.

The city government invested 230 million yuan (US$35 million) on the construction of the school buildings. In addition, Shenzhen Baihe Holding Group Co. Ltd. would invest 40 million yuan in the construction and operation of the school, according to a cooperative agreement.

The school will mainly enroll children of expats who live locally, as well as residents from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan working in Shenzhen.

Parents of 9,000 children apply for international education in Shenzhen every year, the paper said.

However, there are only 1,500 students at the city’s four private international schools, all of which have small campuses.

Besides, the school buildings at the four private schools are all rented.” (Li Hao)
