Roger Garaudy (Rajaa Garaudy as Islamic name)

Roger Garaudy, a French communist intellectual who denied that the Nazis used gas chambers to kill Jews during World War II, has died aged 98.
An ex-member of the communist party, he converted to Islam in the 1980s. His 1996 book The Founding Myths of Israeli Politics denied that the killing of Jews by the Nazis constituted genocide.

During the war Garaudy joined the French Resistance and later wrote more than 50 books - mainly on political philosophy, Marxism, and Islam.

He was expelled from the French Communist Party in 1970 after criticising the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia.

Born into a Catholic family, he initially converted to Protestantism before rejoining the Catholic Church, Judisme and eventually embracing Islam since 70`s.

Garaudy was fined 120,000 francs ($18,000) by a Paris court in 1998 for his anti-Zionist work "The Founding Myths of Israeli Politics" which was found to have distorted the wartime deaths of an estimated six million Jews.

He was given a suspended jail sentence for Holocaust denial in 1998.

He died on Wednesday in the Paris suburb of Chennevieres, local officials said on Friday.
