[28 Oct, Shenzhen] The China Cup got off on an auspicious start yesterday. Before the fleets got underway in the waters, scores of club wielding government officials and VIPs and golf enthusiasts compare skills on the grass of the Shenzhen Century Seaview Golf Club to officiate the opening of the 5th China Cup which was first held in 2007.

At the sound of the horn, the boats for the Simpson Marine Passage Race unfurled their sails at the Hong Kong Yacht Club and headed for the Shenzhen Maritime Sports Base in Daya Bay, a distance of approximately 32 nautical miles. Into its fifth year now, the Chinese regatta has reached a total of 86 teams from over 25 countries and regions and is firmly established as the biggest regatta in China.

At around 2pm the first boat to appear on the horizon of the Shenzhen waters is Jelik II from Hong Kong. Skippered by Frank Pong, coined the Godfather of Asian Yachting Sport, the crew of the boat were obviously all smiles.

Skipper Pong said of his crew, “We have sailed for many years, and the team have not trained specially for this race.” Commenting on the China Cup, he felt good about the event getting better and better by any standard. Now there is this terrific new base. He finds the makeshift immigration and customs control at the base very efficient and fast. It’s probably the smallest in the world, roofed by a white tent and furnished with just a couple of long tables.

After clearing the quay-side customs, the winners on Jelik II were met by blue-clad cheerleaders. At that moment, the teeth on the tanned faces of the crew looked particularly sparkling.
