Ten Foreigners Apply for Plan to Work in Shenzhen

Shenzhen Daily, Helen Deng reported that “TEN foreigners have applied to join Shenzhen’s “Peacock Plan” to work in the city, which will offer successful applicants 800,000 yuan (US$117,000) to 1.5 million yuan in subsidies.

Foreigners account for nearly 10 percent of applicants of the plan from around the world, which began in May this year, according to the human resources bureau Thursday.

Ninety percent of the applicants are doctorate holders and most of them studied or did research at world-class universities, according to the bureau. Thirty percent of the applicants are from the IT sector and the biomedical sector accounts for 21 percent of the applicants. Nearly 60 percent of the applicants are in their 30s.

The ambitious “Peacock Plan” will see the municipal government spend 300 to 500 million yuan each year on living allowances and research subsidies to attract some 10,000 experts in high technology, finance, logistics and culture to work in Shenzhen. The eligible will enjoy privileges such as medical insurance, children’s education allowance and employment opportunities for spouses. "
