Forums for friendly, intelligent discussion

Café philos (also known as ‘Philosophy cafés’) have sprung up throughout the world over the past few years.  They originated in their current form in Paris, France, in 1992. The philosopher Mr. Marc Sautet and several friends gathered to discuss various issues of the day at the now famous “café des Phares” at the Place de la Bastille. Since then, every Sunday morning people would gather to discuss various topics ranging from the classical to the absurd (Is hope a violent thing? Is there value in the Santa Claus myth? What is a fact?). Similar cafés popped up in other locations, first in Paris and then throughout France, where there are now about 100 active café philos. They have gained popularity internationally, with more than 50 active cafe philos in the USA, England, South America, Germany, Belgium, China, Japan and more.

What is a café philo?

A café philo is an organised debate in a public place, governed by respect. It aims at establishing a philosophical exchange that democratically distributes the right to speak amongst the participants. It strives to induce “philosophic moments”, to pass from simple opinion to thought, to communally analyse concepts, to decode various meanings in the form of a collective exploration of a particular subject. It is intended to be intelligent conversation, but not academic or esoteric.

Why?

The basic goal is to make philosophy accessible to all, to create a forum for meaningful dialogue. Café philos try to revive the spirit of the Socratic period in Athens, when philosophers and the general public would gather to engage in dialogue in the “agora” or “forum”.

Doors open at 13;30 PLEASE be early so that the debate is not interupted by late arrivals.
