Warning: Anyone seeking medical care at CanAm International Medical Center, Shenzhen. Please be advised their Medical Director Dr. Horst Hermann Brauwers, “has been suspended from the Medical Register and may not practice as a doctor in the UK.”
“The General Medical Council (GMC) regulates doctors in the United Kingdom (UK). We register doctors to practise in the UK and have the powers to either issue a warning to a doctor, remove the doctor from the register, suspend or place conditions on a doctor's registration”. www.gmc-uk.org
Details: GMC Reference No. 6087241
Given Names: Horst Herrmann
Surname: Brauwers
Gender: Man
Primary Medical Qualification: State Exam Medical 1972, University Hamburg
Full Registration: 05, Dec. 2003
Specialist Register: This doctor is not in the Specialist Register
GP Register: From 31 Mar 2006 but currently suspended.
For additional information see his CV at: www.teamsasha.com/instructors-horst-cv.html
History: I first became seriously concerned about this doctor and medical center when my girlfriend went to see him for a chronic back pain problem. His diagnosis was that she suffered from a sinus infection and thus prescribed antibiotics. In addition, she was given a Lung Function Test. This is how they billed her for her visit:
Standard Consultation: 700.00 RMB Investigations (blood test) 2,900.00 RMB
Lung Function Test: 220.00 RMB Antibiotics: 327.00 RMB
Total Cost: 4,207 RMB, $615.90 US, 433.48 Euros
Adding insult to injury, this doctor nor his staff have provided any information regarding the results of the 2,900 RMB “Investigation”. Sadly, my girlfriend continues to suffer from her pain. It’s my belief that this doctor and clinic should be sanctioned and or closed. In the UK the GMA stopped this doctor from practicing medicine because he is a menace to the public’s health. After some review of his CV and detecting numerous irregularities I think you too might conclude the same as myself and the GMA.

The last two times I went there they also gave me LOCAL doctors who had NOT been Western trained and one needed a translator...no English. I walked out on the 2nd one.
I don't care if the doctor is Asian or not, but I do want to see one trained in the West. One can be positive about China, but they have a long way to go in terms of medical training!
And if CanAm is going to charge US$100-$200 a consultation then the doctor should be Western trained and speak proficient English!
After all, one could go to a Chinese doctor in a Chinese hospital and pay $30.
I'm done with CanAm. It all seems a little 'shonky' to me.
Anyone know any other options for Western medical care in Shenzhen or do I have to go to Hong Kong?

I received very good service from this doctor and he correctly suggested I see a specialist in HK. I had a gastric problem which he investigated appropriately with ultrasound. I have since had surgery in HK and have almost completely recovered. The specialists there confirmed his initial diagnosis. Naturally the fees are higher than your local Chinese clinic or hospital but so is the quality of the service. From my experience I would recommend him.
The fact of my beef with Dr. Brouwers is the treatment we sought regarding our son's allergies. As this was over a year ago, I cannot fairly remember all the details, but the referral he promised never came after asking a third time for it. We are now finally getting help in Hong Kong, but if he couldn't help us, I wish he would have just said so & not wasted our time or $ on whatever he did do! I'm giving 2 stars only b/c he did help with general sickness, with antibiotics which helped as well as a health issue with my husband.
Nice French German Doctor there. I agree clinic staff are not professional and is generally too expensive, but there is a nice french german Doctor, Kurt Matthaus, who is practising on friday and saturday there. If you can have appointment with him, it worth to go there. Off course better to go to HK, but it is not always easy, we have a small kid, and it is a relief knowing we can visit a good doctor in Shenzhen.

For English-speaking health care in Shekou, I'm only aware of CanAm and S.O.S. Most of the other teachers at my international school recommend Central Health in Hong Kong over both of these clinics, so I go there for my health care whenever possible.
That being said, I have been to CanAm before for some food poisoning when I first arrived and my passport was unavailable due to visa processing. Dr. Elvis spoke okay English, but he prescribed me 7 days worth of drinking clay called Smecta. I looked it up online, and it is used in the US for treating diarrhea in dogs and cats. He did more tests and then prescribed antibiotics, only to later say he was mistaken, and there was no real reason to give me antibiotics. After over a week and three visits to his clinic, he finally gave me a generic version of Immodium. Needless to say, I was pretty pissed to find out he had Immodium available that whole time! It would have saved me a lot of time and energy, not to mention the missed work at the beginning of the school year!
The only redeeming qualities of CanAm are its location if you can't get to HK, and the fact that it accepts foreign insurance, so you don't have to pay anything out-of-pocket.

Useless medical center. Beautiful interior to make foreigner feel it is different, very expensive to make foreigner think it is exceptional service, speak very kindly as a friend to make foreigner more confident, a waiting room to make foreigner feel like at their country doctor' s place... but you can go to the local hospital; it will be the service and same medicine. If you do not need anything and want to spend money, i warmly recommend you this medical center. If you are sick, better go to local hospital, it will be the same except decoration.

Visiting CanAm medical center, please do so at your own risk. My wife waited 6 hrs in the waiting area for transport to Hong Kong after suspected Meningitis. After waiting 6 hrs i was told we could not get a bed and my medical insurance had not given clearance. God help if she was having a heard attack. She would have been toast. The Doctor (Dr Bill) if indeed he was a doctor. Seemed totally unrepentant and carefree about the whole situation. Meanwile my wife was in absoulute agony.
After being told this, i picked up my USA phone and called Cigna SOS and within 1 hr i had a bed and a specialist waiting in Hong Kong. Great job Cigna and the support staff. Could not have been more helpfull. it was a nightmare that i felt everyone should know about.
GOD BLESS CIGNA SOS staff and its Thank goodness there are people (at home) who help plonkers like me who work away from home. Thx Thx Thx Cigna. And CanAm i hope someone eventually shuts you guys down.
