The Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School (PKUSZ) was established as a satellite graduate campus of Peking University in 2001 via a joint venture with the Shenzhen Municipal Government.
It is situated inside the University Town of Shenzhen, along with the graduate schools of Tsinghua University and the Harbin Institute of Technology. PKUSZ consists of 30 research laboratories among which are several major State-level laboratories.
PKUSZ is a graduate education institution comprising seven postgraduate schools:
• HSBC Business School
• School of Transnational Law
• School of Computer and Information Engineering

The School of Computer & Information Engineering (SCIE), was founded in 2002. The School offers MS and PhD degrees in Microelectronics and Solid-State Electronics, Integrated Circuits and Systems and Computer Applications Technology. Research areas include Nano-Electronic Devices and Integration Technology; Systems on a Chip (SOC); Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) Technology; SOC Design Verification and Testing: Network Communication and Information Security; Multimedia Technology; Network Information Engineering; Human-Computer Interaction; Robotic Systems, among others.
PKUSZ-CIE has acquired extensive support from Shenzhen municipal, Guangdong provincial, and Chinese Central governments. It has also been a participant in the Innovation Consortium of Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Guangdong Industrial and Academic Institutions.
The School of Chemical Biology & Biotechnology (SCBB), founded in 2003, features three key facilities for research and postgraduate education: the Laboratory of Chemical Genomics, the Nano- and Micro-Material Research Center, and the Translational Medicine Center. This combination of synthetic organic chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry and biology establishes a platform for leading-edge innovation in the medical field. SCBB provides premium support expertise to the nation’s biomedical industry.
In 2007, the school became the first PhD-granting institution in China in the field of "Chemical Genomics", with the approval of the Ministry of Education. SCBB began construction in November 2009, with a funding of RMB 30 million, part of Peking University’s “985 Plan”. The Laboratory of Chemical Genomics is a Key Lab for Guangdong province, as well as a priority-funding R&D incubator, approved by the State Ministry of Science and Technology. Its laboratories explore anticancer and antiviral agent relationships through a combination of synthetic organic chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, and biology.
In 2007, after years of efforts, LGC in 2007 was granted the status of Key Laboratory Project in Guangdong Province, making it one of the four provincial-level Key Labs in Shenzhen. It was assessed as one of the best laboratories in the Shenzhen Key Lab evaluations in 2009, and gained eligibility as a National R&D center in 2010.
The School of Environment and Energy (SEE) was established in 2009. The School addresses critical contemporary issues related to energy and the environment that are challenging to the continued development of both China and the world, through research and education in the broad areas of renewable energy and environmental protection. SEE builds on the tradition and expertise of Peking University’s Environmental Science and Engineering School.
The school’s main laboratory, the Key Laboratory for Urban Habitat Environmental Science and Technology, consists of an Environmental Engineering Laboratory and an Environment and Health Laboratory. Additional laboratories in the low-carbon energy and related areas include the Wastewater Control and Resource Laboratory, the Atmospheric Simulation Laboratory, the Environment and Energy Information Laboratory, the Urban Waste Treatment and Utilization Laboratory, the Green Lighting Laboratory and the Environmental Bioenergy Laboratory.
SEE offers both MS and PhD degrees in nine areas of research within two major fields: Environmental Sciences and Environmental Engineering. Research areas include Environmental Planning and Management, Environment and Health, Water Science and Environmental Informatics, Water Treatment and Resource Engineering, Environmental Microbiology, Energy Efficiency Engineering, and Bioenergy. Currently, the school has about 20 faculty members and more than 110 full-time graduate students enrolled.
The School of Urban Planning and Design (SUPD), founded in 2009, focuses on making a unique contribution to the field of urbanization evolution and China’s sustainable development. The School offers two professional MS programs in Geography: Urban and Regional Planning and Landscape Architecture. In addition to two PhD programs: Physical Geography and Human Geography.
SUPD hosts three branches of the State Key Laboratory of Human Settlement, Environmental Science, and Technology: the Laboratory of Basic Geography, the Laboratory of Applied Ecology, and the Digital City Laboratory. The School also includes the Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Cyclical Economy, the Peking University-Hong Kong University Development and Innovation Research Center, Landscape Ecology & Digital City Research Center, the China Urban Design Research Center, the Land Economy and Housing Policy Research Center, and the Ecological Restoration and Waste Recycling Technology Research Center.
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) offers programs in Communication, Sociology and Psychology along with academic support and supervision from their respective counterparts at Peking University: the School of Journalism and Communication; the Department of Sociology; and the Department of Psychology.
Education and research focus on the urbanization of Shenzhen and the Pan-Pearl River Delta, including prominent issues surrounding regional development, population, immigration, industrial transformation, social security, and metro-culture. Scientific and academic support from Peking University and Shenzhen enhance the school’s strength in Sociology, Communication, and Psychology. There are field studies and research in the following domains: social phenomena, hot topics, policies and regulations, development strategies, social conceptions, arts, fashion and entertainments.
