I worked at the school 1 1/2 years the school is a basic Chinese school. Keep everybody happy and get the money which is a normal business in China. Nobody is accountable for the children s education yet, but the time is coming. The parents are getting smarter they want the best there money can buy for their children. But as a teacher I don't care what the admin, think I care about teaching the children the best way I can, My students there went from the bottom to the top of the class. But you are right the admin. office politics/BS are very bad thats why I stopped working there. They need to learn to leave the teachers alone to do their jobs instead of playing games with them. |

Its the same all over Asian....teachers make the difference most companies or schools just want to rob the parents. Unfortunately, this takes a toll on teachers too, and especially if they are here for a short time...they tend to give up caring and just try to pass the time...and make as much money without doing much. I've worked in Japan, Korea and China..by far the parents are a little smarter here than in Korea, but the schools are GARBAGE HERE. I taught at Shenzhen Royal Kindy they charge 6000 rmb a month tuition per kid 25 kids in a class and the teachers there are not even all native English speakers; Russian, German, Israeli, Colombian...Although they do try there best! But realistically, Im not attacking the teachers but if I was paying that much class should be smaller and the teachers need to know the language! |

externityzxz is correct. Nanshan bilingual school looks satisfying from the outside but on the inside it's like hell. The principle doesn't bother to repaint the school. He only cares about MONEY. He treats a lot of the teachers badly. Recently the school has started a new class for middle school students. It's called the 'Checkpoint class'. That class is for students who won't be attending high school in China. The principle has threatened the foreign teachers who teach the Checkpoint class that if students fail the next exam, he will separate the Checkpoint class and lower the teachers' salary. Last semester the principle told the school that the school that the Checkpoint class would be all in English, well it's not, more than half of the lessons are in Chinese and if students don't do well in these Chinese subjects, teachers put a lot of pressure on students. So if you're thinking about going to that school, my suggestion is to maybe talk with some teachers and ask what they think about the school system. |
No, I don't work at the school. I never will. |
I agree with xiaosnergy. Some teachers even pick on foreign students when they're on a bad mood. Most foreign students don't know chinese and teachers threaten them or embarrass them right infront of the whole class. They should not treat students that way. |
yes its very well to hear from you so great critique of stuff boards restrictions in your school, and a messy money holding...I will be there, so hope will be posssible correct it for all students and teachers too ;-) take care, |
xiaosnergy, thanks for speaking out. Someone needed to do it a long time ago. I was not aware that a place even existed, or I would have added to this a long time ago. Something needs to be done about this school and the way they have ripped teachers off and bullied them for the past few years. What to tell the truth. |
xiaosnergy's comment is right on! I worked at Shenzhen/Nanshan just long enough to see a school with a lot of potential go down the toilet. I entered the school as a professional foreign teacher. I was among many that was bullied and ripped off of promised monies. My entire last month's pay and travel allowance was kept by the school only because I refused to work for them any longer. I was only one of the teachers that this happened to. Don't waste your time even appling for a job at this place and if you really are interested in getting a good English education for that child you love, find a different school. I have since worked at other schools in China and have found a totally different leadership and quality of education. All the other schools I have worked for are extremely kind, professional, and really care for the students and the educational standard. It really broke my heart to see Nanshan Bilingual School and what they are doing to the students and teachers there. I witnessed the mass exodus of the director and over half of the foreign teachers in just one semester. I have friends that tried to live through the whole mess. Save your time and your money and find a better school. |
you're thinking about teaching at the school? if you do.... your life will be hell =p |
yeah, lately a teacher has picked on some students in a class since she was not in a good mood. It's true, some teachers have threatened some classes that they would give up on their class if they don't do well. A teacher told a class that they are useless and can't do anything. Teacher punish students for no reason, a student has done nothing wrong and he/she could still get punished depending on their teachers mood. The teachers don't treat everyone equally. Even though it's hard to treat all students fairly, they don't even try. They treat foreigner students badly, they treat students who can't catch up with teachers badly. And with all that going on in the school, the principle doesn't care. He expects everyone to look up to him. |
yes, something needs to be done about the school. The school should be sued for the kind of food they give to students. They give students food which is suitable for farm animals. A lot of teachers have quit because of the way the principle teats teachers, especially foreign teachers. He threatens them and fires really good teachers. He has once fired one the the schools best foreign teachers. The teachers at the school also treats foreign students badly. The whole school is a mess. The principle has a great amount of greed for money. He says he cares about the students education, but he doesn't. Like whatstrue said, don't even think about enrolling at that school, if you want to teach at a nice school in shenzhen, try some of the international schools. Like QSI or SIS. I guarantee you that it's better than Nanshan Bilingual. Even if the principle promises you that he will give you a certain amount of salary, he's just lying, he will rip you off if you don't satisfy him. |
Yes,don't waste your time in this school. Don't waste money. Don't spend your time in hell. They only care about money and the student's education. They want students to get a perfect score ,even foreign students so then their school will be one of best schools in shenzhen. A lot of parents who loves their kids got fooled by that. Education is not the most important, what is most important is that you're healthy and you enjoy your life. The school gives too much pressure on the students. Most students will get tired and they will automaticly will have no interest in learning. Some foreign students that didn't score an A's on Chinese was insulted by the teacher because he/she did not score what the teacher wanted. This was not fair and the teacher read the score outloud right infront of the whole class to embarass this student. The principle never says anything about it. The school hired a new english teacher which the students didn't really like and there was this nice foreign teacher who was teaching primary and middle school but got fired because of no reason. The students all liked this teacher because he was fair and he was really nice to students. I think like the school fired this teacher because the students did not like the new one but it got even worse, the students hated the new one even more. They had no interest in learning English anymore. |
Well... the schools education system is all wrong. Memorize this, memorize that. Everyone does the exact same thing. A lot of the teachers make a lot of children miserable. They basically brainwash a young child's mind. No imagination is used. Imagination and creativity doesn't exist there. They don't know what those two words mean. A young foreign child going to that school end in results with destroying that child's mind. The school fee is really expensive. Nanshan/ Bilingual is a bilingual school, there are meant to be about four classes that are bilingual. There aren't even enough lessons in English for the school to be called a bilingual school. As for the checkpoint class, they have exactly the same amount of classes in English only they have about one to two classes in English more than bilingual classes. Checkpoint class students pay more, the principle tricked parents again. Even the education they give in chinese is mostly all useless. There aren't enough classes in English. The whole school is a fraud. It's wasting time spending time there. The principle tells new foreign teachers who are about to teach at the school that the school is very high standard. Though from a rating of 1-10 (as one being bad and 10 satisfying) the result is between 1 and 4. The school is a fraud, no matter what the principle says to you, don't agree to teach there. The school won't change for a long time. |
Welcome to China.... Most schools are after the money with no accountability. |
I agree. |
well, ive been to that school also, just visit not teach there, and ive heard a lot of those things about what you are saying. Are you referring to the principal when you were saying principle? hehehe, thats two different thing man. I dont want to be one sided, and of course this is china, they can do whatever they want, ive met a lot of students and teachers who went to that school also and theyve told me a lot of those things that you were saying. Man yours is a little bit over board, i have a friend that also worked there and i think they are still there, just to tell you , they are doing really great until now, and they are liked by the teachers as well as the students. and its basically true that if you are capable and that you are really workin your ass really hard just to keep and maintain your job, maybe a lot of those teachers there who were fired might still be keeping their teaching jobs until now instead of mocking and cursing and destroying the schools reputation and credibility. Actually i dont really know the people inside that school, but i know some of the teachers, some of my friends there are gone. They told me they finished their contract and was not renewed. Its the schools discretion man, i am not chinese but its not because your white or caucasian or anything you are already good in teaching english, not everybody man. if im the owner of that school i would have probably done the same thing. Id look for the best teachers and i would not stop until i find them and then definitely i will fire the ones who are incapable of teaching. I agree with the food quality that they have, i tried and tasted their food several times but i think its not that bad, because i havent heard that a single student died because of the meal they serve. |
yeah, it's true. Someone ate the food they served and got sick. I'm not sure who though, but that person was sick for quite a while. The food is fot for pigs, they give the food to pigs too. Also in the school kitchen the chefs keep a ginuea pig in there. The food is dirty and the new rule is that sutends are so students are meant to starve if they can't eat the school food.(unless they are very cunning and smart ^^) |
I just got fired there for forgetting to erase the board after class. The headmaster walks around after each period and checks all the classrooms. Also, desks and chairs must be lined up or else you get written up. Most days I had to stay until 7 or 8 to mark the homework. Unmarked homework will get you written up too. It's really hard to teach there. Every day you've got to line up with the students on the football field to do exercises. Now it's quite hot. Also, all new teachers are required to inspect/clean the restrooms twice a day. Sometimes it's more than I could stand. So I think my firing is a blessing. I know many foreign teachers hate working there. It's not a school really, just a money maker. Good luck to any fool who goes to this school. |
I am not making this up either. Ask any teacher there. Just stop by and ask. Good luck and God bless. |
Something like that is actually really possible in that school. The headmaster is really harsh. RARELY there will be a good class in the year... If you're lucky, you might be able to teach the good class. |
I also want to say that the headmaster made us give students inflated marks. We were told that this was to encourage students to work hard and to feel good about themselves. But I think it does the opposite. I think it makes students lazy. Why work hard if you don't have to work hard to get an "A"? |
There often competetions around Nanshan that the beruals make(so they get the scores). Then the scores are usually announced and other people will get to see which school has the highest marks.... The headmaster will use bribery/threaten teachers... |
the school is a train wreck. Everything is fake, headmaster keeps money all for himself. |

I have an interview with the school to work there via phone. Should I mention any of the above in a tactful way and see what the answers are? Also I'm taking my children there too and they will need schooling, any suggestions? Thanks..... I'm a bit worried |

International schools |

2 + 2 = ? (not verified)
Hello everyone. Can someone please tell me about the students and the working atmosphere in the Cambridge International Center (CIC) at Nanshan Shenzhen Bilingual School? I am considering a math position at the CIC. The salary seems good, but reading the various posts...just made me wonder what is actually going on..... Thanks in advance! |

The high school these days experiences great changes. Australian guy was “promoted” to insignificant position. Instead, they hired a total wacko from Algeria or maybe Morocco. The school is firing and hiring teachers to his liking. Teachers were hoarded into one big staff room with temperature over 30oC with students roaming and screaming inside. They have a nasty habit of firing people without any reason. Over 50% of foreign teachers left the school. Now the school is desperate for teachers. If you are not desperate yourself you’d better run and… don’t turn around. |

As said before: 1. Teachers are threatened to stay or fired. Bottom line, the school is a fraud and should be avoided. Find a qualified international school. |

Every week you are sent into a room with a big round table so that "big boss" can come in there and straighten you out. You are expected to take notes, nod and smile. You dare don't say a word unless asked, and you better never say anything negative or your head will be on the chopping block. That's how they roll there!!!! The attitude is "just shut up and teach". |
sounds like funful school |

Some tips for the school bosses:
This school sucks. Nobody is happy here. Our favourite English teacher just left because of Youcef. Youcef is our head teacher, he said always bad about us. He hit A2 student too. We wrote a letter and ask to fire Youcef. But English teacher was fired because he help us. School likes Yocef because he is from Africa and very rude. This school is hypocrisy. |
Yes, the school is terrible. I still agree with that. The school will do anything in order to have control over any situation. I warn anyone who is considering this school as an option (student or teacher), DON'T. Many people have learned the hard way and have suffered from it, but to those who have read the experience of the people above, i do not reccomend this school what so ever. |
yes everyone above is right. The school is getting even worse... especially with the "CIE" program(THIS is a fake CIE program... its a fraud. The schools trying to copy one to fool parents to pay their cash and "think" that their son/daughter is in one of the BEST schools in shenzhen). Many of the school's foreign teachers has left the school because of the principal. The school's headteacher, Youcef keeps firing people that dislike him even though the whole school hates him. Everyones all signed a letter to kick him out the school but it was worthless. Most of the foreigners left because everyone has to obey whatever he says. The wage is decided by how many classes you teach so of course every teacher would want to have as many classes as they can. The head of our school who teaches AS and A2 and WHO created the timetable took up as many classes as he could. They even cut classes like music/art/PE for AS & A2. Students who needs to take art have to use up their study time to do art classes whenever the teachers have time. As for PE, they took up the classes because they decided that WE SHOULDNT HAVE ANY TIME TO RELAX OR TO HAVE ANY FUN. ITS ALL ABOUT STUDY STUDY STUDY. DONT DO ANYTHING THAT WOULD TAKE UP YOUR STUDY TIME. This school (well actually "center") is not accepted by some famous universities so thats why students had to change to another school. This is a HUGE problem. Some students who knew what was happening and told their parents thats its impossible to stay in the school decided to go abroad to another high school because the schools abroad are WAYYYY better than this chinese school (Yea they teach subjects in chinese with fake copies of Eng textbooks). What happened was the chinese headteacher called the parents to the school and persuaded that their kids had ABSOLUTELY no problem with getting in that university. How great their kids were and how the school could help them improve their grades. How they arent suitable at all to go to another school now and how they'll waste their time abroad so why not just stay here in this "WONDERFUL SCHOOL". ALL OF THIS IS A LIE. Somehow the parents just believe whatever chinese headteacher had said. THEY HAD TO LIE SO THAT THEY COULD KEEP ALL THEIR STUDENTS AND THEIR MONEY. THEY HAD TO COVER THE TRUTH SO THAT ALL THE STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO STAY. This is what they're doing. As for the subjects you have to pick, there has been a new rule. Students must have to study English, Math and Physics(the most important subjects for this school). As for other subjects MUST pick "set A" or "Set B"... yea thats right even though thats not what you going to study in the future. Non important subjects are History, Biology, ICT, Art because some chinese students CANT DO GOOD IN THEM. These classes you'll have to find your own study time and learn them. Before then, night self study was at 7:00-9:00, which was supposed to be for students to study but now? Students will have to go to classes who chose some of these subjects. Who can study NON-STOP for that LONG? Even when you work you dont need to work THAT LONG(10hrs) unless you have OT! Parents wanting to send their children to this school, please considerate it again. It'll mean leading your children into miserable life. Do you want that? I dont think so... |
^ all the above, goes to students too. If you are a parent, I very strongly reccomending another school. |
Congratulations and thanks to David Mounter for posting his rating of the school. I totally agree with his negative assessment of the management of the school. Do not take a job at this school. you will totally regret it. Do not send your children to this school, they will receive an inferior education. Many of the students are more competent in English than the Chinese teachers that are teaching the students English. Marks are inflated when they are sent to foreign universities so that the students will be admitted. This is terrible because once the students are admitted to these universities they fail because their English is not good enough to cope with the educational material. Robert (Deak) Deacon, an American teacher, was not re-engaged because he questioned the practice of inflating the marks. Another teacher was told on the final day that he would not be re-engaged for the following year. STAY AWAY FROM THE NANSHAN BILINGUAL SCHOOL. |
I know a few people from this funful school. There are definitely some issues with Nanshan Firstly, all professional foreign teachers have individual rooms with air-conditioning. Judging by his spelling and ambiguous grammar, David Mounter was not among those people. Too bad, too bad for him... Secondly, the school pays teachers their salary in a timely fashion. Furthermore, it seems, the school is willing to put up with a lot of crap from the foreign teachers. Mentioned above Youcef is a very strange fellow. Once he slapped a high school student across the face. Many students signed a petition with their demand to sack Youcef. Was he sacked? Not at all, he was promoted instead! Ha-ha, this is China! They’re not perfect, but they don’t expect us to be perfect. |

Hi Everyone, I am working in Shenzhen Nanshan Bingual School happily. The school honored what is written in the contract. Our salary is on time. The salary is increasing in every renewal of the contract. The school is really working hard to provide a valid working visa for all foreign teachers. If the documents of the foreign teachers are complete and valid, there is no reason that they could not get working visa because I believe that this institution (SNBS)is not employing foreign teachers without genuine documents to get working visa. The school provides housing allowance to all foreign teachers which is enough for the house rent. There is Chinese staff assigned to help looking for a descent and safe apartment for newly employed foreign teachers. 2 months deposits and 1 month advance payment is usually asked by the Landlord in order that you could occupy the apartment and that amount of money is too hard to provide for a newly hired teacher. There are many instances that Philip, a kind person usually extend help for foreign teachers to pay for the deposits and advance payment. Tim, a Vice principal is descent, very professional, kind , approachable, dedicated and very qualified school manager. He possesses a quality of a good leader. He never entertains gossips because he is very busy for his job and his concentration is to cater quality education for students and quality service for the staffs. Youcef is highly qualified for his position as Head Teacher. Academic performance of students is his primary concern. Regarding for the cleanliness issue that was previously mentioned particularly the teacher`s office, I beg to disagree to that statement because personally I could not work in a dirty environment. My point of view is this, if somebody is complaining about cleanliness, suppose to be it may start it from you, clean first your desk and be a role model to your colleagues so that everybody will follow you. Try to have self analysis and think of the following ; 1.Did I contribute anything to the school to cater quality education for my students? 2.What is the best practice that I need to show to people around me that they may follow? 3.Why do I need to complaint, I could not even provide a document as a requirement in order to process my visa? After self analysis provide answers to those questions and you will realize that, the school has no fault but you have.If teaching is your passion, Shenzhen Nanshan Bilingual School is a good School for you. |
I knew I should've not gotten into all this... Davie, I cannot tell you my name. There's a good chance that some day I will work at this school. Why are you doing all this? The school provides a place to work for many people. If you don't like the school, don't work there. Why ask others not to work there? Obviously, you have a hidden agenda, mate. Something is fishy about the whole story. |
Looking at the Shenzhen Party profile of someone identifying himself as Ben MacAskill from Zhuhai I see a contradiction. In his latest rebuttal of David Mounter's assessment of Shenzhen Nanshan Bilingual School he says that he cannot identify himself because he may work at the school at a later date. Why does he say that he is Ben MacAskill but say he cannot identify himself. I do not see how positive comments would prevent him from working at the school. What is his hidden agenda? Also, I see that someone identified as a teacher at the school and says in her profile that she is from "elsewhere in China" praises the school. Who is this person? She calls herself "honesty" but honest people do not hide their identities. Looking back at comments made by teachers (externity2x2, xiaosenergy, Robertl, etc.) dating back to May 2009 I can see that David's comments only echo the negative assessments made by former teachers. Why did these teachers make these negative comments about the school? Were they only providing a valuable assessment of the school that would help other teachers find a good job? Decide for yourself but I prefer to base my opinion on comments made by people who identify themselves instead of hiding behind the cloak of anonymity. Every year there is an exodus of teachers from this school. David did resign from the school and did find a better job elsewhere in China. Many other qualified teachers have done the same. |

FYI: My negative comments about the school were deleted after they remained for one year on the message board. I was commenting truthfully, but I guess that the truth hurts. |
I worked at the school (their CIE Center) during 2009/2010 and I can confirm that what David Mounter is saying is 100% correct. |
I worked in the school, so I know what I am talking about when I say there seems to be a naiveté when it comes to how their Chinese Management views Western teachers. I have seen excellent, well qualified and highly educated teachers fired, while mediocre or even awful teachers are retained or promoted. I think that actual teaching skill ranks low on their priority list. It is actually backwards from what you would expect. |
I have a very funny (or sad, depending on how you look at it) story to tell. At the time it wasn't so funny, but looking back on it now, I have to laugh. When I first arrived in Shenzhen in 2009, they put me up in a nice apartment near the school. It was only temporary until I found my own. There was a Chinese young man living there who was not a teacher. I think he was just a friend of the family. Soon after, another teacher named Dean arrived. He was to share the apartment with the young man and myself. He had his Filipino girlfriend with him. He nearly went nuts because he did not like the fact that the Chinese young man was living there. There were several reasons for this, but the main reason was that he felt that only foreign teachers should occupy that apartment, as he was told. The two nearly had a fight and he told me that the young man brandished a knife and threated to kill him. I awoke one night to hear Dean screaming at the top of his lungs at Phillip on the phone. He was not happy with the living arrangement, or the school, or the fact that he had been misled. This guy went off like a volcano!!!! He bailed out and left them without an Economics teacher, so they had to scramble and find another one. They were not happy with that guy either and he eventually got canned. Just another one of the fun adventures I had at the school.
