How to Get Hong Kong & Mainland China e-Channel Passes

If you've entered or exited China to or from Hong Kong you've probably already seen and experienced long lines at the border waiting to pass through customs. You may have also noticed that some people don't have to wait in these lines and quickly pass through a self-service area (e-Channel). If you're here for an extended period of time, are a business traveler, or meet other qualifications, you can also skip those long lines and use the self service areas!


It's important to point out that as you'll need to go through two different custom inspection areas; one on the mainland China side and another on the Hong Kong side. This unfortunately means that you'll also need to apply for these two e-Channel passes separately. Read more »

"SZ Live" English Radio Program Now Streaming

A brand new, live, English-language radio show called Shenzhen Live began streaming yesterday afternoon from Yeyan Radio Station.

Shenzhen Live is a weekly, English language, lifestyle talk show that discusses local, current events and other issues of importance to Shenzhen residents. Hosted by Pax (Canada) from Asia Club Zone and Cecilia (China) from the Shenzhen Daily, listeners can expect to learn more about the city they call home, while listening to unique and eclectic music tracks. Some episodes will feature in studio guests. 

The show’s current time slot is from 3 to 4 p.m. on Sundays, but the show will re-run on Wednesdays from 3 to 4 p.m. Read more »

China plans more perks for owner of electric cars

China will roll out more benefits, including tax breaks, to promote the use of electric vehicles-especially among private consumers-as it seeks to cut down on pollution. 

Minister of Sciences and Technology Wan Gang announced preferential policies that could be expected, just a day after the State Council said the government would exempt purchase tax for newenergy vehicles. 

These include all electric cars, plug-in bybrids and fuelcell vehicles. 

China wants to boost the sales of electric vehicles and has set a target of having 500,000 on the road by next year. 

But the nation only has about 70,000 new-energy vehicles in operation-and more than half of these cars are public buses and taxis.  Read more »

SZ to raise pealties for traffic violations

Shenzhen will amend two of its major traffic laws, strengthening penalties for violations to curb reckless driving. Authorities are soliciting public opinion on the draft laws until Tuesday, when they will be submitted to the city's legislature for approval, Chinese-language newspapers reported Thursday.

Drivers who participate in street racing deemed unfit to be charged in court would be fined 2,000 yuan . Drivers could be fined up to 1,000 yuan for deliberately driving at excessively low speeds or for not yielding to emergency vehicles or vehicles carrying hazardous chemicals. Illegally switching lanes would carry a fine of 500 yuan.  Read more »
