The significance of 26th October, Austrian National Day, goes back to the beginning of the 2nd Republic after the Second World War. 26th October, 1955 marks the day that followed the day on which the last foreign troops left the Austrian territory; therefore the first day Austria was again an independent and sovereign country.

The Federal Government of Austria celebrates this day every year with a series of events in Vienna. These events include: the Federal President and the Federal Minister for Defense attending a mass on the Heldenplatz, the Federal President followed by the Federal Government laying wreaths at the tomb of the unknown soldier in the Crypt of the outer Burgtor, a festive meeting of the Council of Ministers is held, the government attends a Concert for Austria at the Vienna Staatsoper, and then finally the new recruits of the Austrian Armed Service are sworn in.

Legend has it that a soldier of the Polish-Habsburg army, while liberating Vienna from the second Turkish siege in 1683, found a number of sacks with strange beans. Initially, these were thought to be camel feed and people wanted to burn them. The Polish King Jan III Sobieski granted the sacks to one of his officers by the name of Jerzy Franciszek Kulczycki. He went on to start the first coffee-house. After some experimentation, he added some sugar and milk; and the Viennese coffee tradition was born. This achievement has been recognised in many modern Viennese coffee houses by the hanging of a picture of Kulczycki in the window. Another account is that Kulczycki, having spent two years in Ottoman captivity, knew perfectly well what coffee really was and tricked his superiors into granting him the beans that were considered worthless, according to others.

Vienna’s first coffee house was opened by the Greek Johannes Theodat in 1685. Fifteen years later, four Greek-owned coffee houses had the privilege to serve coffee to locals.

The new drink was well-received and coffee houses began popping up rapidly. In the early period, the various drinks had no names, and customers would select the mixtures from a colour-shaded chart.

As the first and only Vienna Café House in Shenzhen, Vienna Café features original Austrian cakes and pastries as well as the traditional Viennese coffees. On offer are more than 30 cake varieties and 14 coffee selections from 8:00am till 23:00pm daily. In addition, you will also find the trandtional menu of Johann Strauss’s and Mozart’s favouite dishes in Vienna Café. People can choose to take away and enjoy elsewhere, or eat in the café.

Austrian tradition is noted for its appreciation of cakes and coffees in their culture. Mentioned by Mr Thomas Maier, who hails form Vienna, Austria is the hotel director of food and beverage, “for centuries, the Vienna Café House used to be the favourite place for all of the sophisticated people to gather. Their regular visitors ranged from famous musicians, politicians, poets and painters.
