iPhone 3G sold unlocked in Hong Kong

iPhone 3G can now be bought in Hong Kong from the Apple Store unlocked. The 8GB model sells for HK$5,400 (4,755RMB) or HK$6,200 (5,460RMB) for the 16GB model.

"iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation."

This should mean that it should be easy to activate and bring back to China. Please post a comment if you have successfully done this.

The article Regarding Apple’s Direct Sales of Unlocked, Contract-Free iPhones in Hong Kong has some speculation as to why the Hong Kong Apple store might be the only store selling the iPhone 3G unlocked direct to the consumer. Maybe it has something to do with negotiations with China mobile and/or the iPhone grey market.

We have been in contact with the Designer Group a popular Apple reseller in Hong Kong and they said that they will be selling unlocked iPhones as well in the next couple days.
