What is V-Day?
V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and sexual slavery.

For the third year Shekou will present a benefit production of The Vagina Monologues at The Terrace, Sea World, Shekou on May 22nd and 23rd 2009 at 6:30pm on behalf of the V-Day 2009 Campaign. This benefit production has and will continue to raise and donate all proceeds to a local cause in China. This year the proceeds will go to the same charity in the past called Captivating International and to a specific project called “Seng Girls Home (SGH)” which is located in the Qinghai Province.

The SGH is a home for Tibetan Girls. It was established in 2005 by a Tibetan man who had a passion for rescuing girls from poor circumstances and giving them a chance to go to school. Some of the girls at the SGH have come from very poor families who cannot afford to look after them because of a lack of resources. A number of girls are from poor families who were given to other families as house maids to pay-off generational loans or to receive food and cash to survive. Even though it is required by law to send children to school for 9 years, many of these nomadic families do not value formal education and instead keep their girls at home to work because of necessity.

The SGH is currently caring for 40 girls and has plans to expand the support center to cater for the needs of up to 100 girls. We are seeking your help in supporting these girls with financial aid. We require capital donations to finance the purchase of computers, desks and chairs, school supplies, the completion of the school and dormitory buildings and a toilet and shower facility. Imagine linking hands together and helping these women and girls stand up and become who they were created to be - women and girls who realize that they are valued and loved by people around the globe. We want these girls to know they can dream dreams and become teachers, doctors, dancers, chefs or whatever their hearts desire.

Last year over 4000 V-Day benefits took place around the world raising funds and awareness towards ending violence against women. Since 1998, V-Day and these highly successful events have raised over $60 million for local beneficiaries working to end violence against women and girls. Hot on the heels of their success, Shekou has joined this global movement as part of the V-Day 2009 Campaign.
