Q&A with Shenzhen Author Huang Guosheng at the Book Exchange Library

We're proud to kick off our 2019 roster of events with a weekday evening Q&A session featuring a local author.

Bilingual writer Huang Guosheng tells the story of a young migrant pursuing his dreams in his novel The Road to Shenzhen (深圳梦). The English edition of the book was nominated for the Dublin Literary Award, an annual prize handed out through the city's public library system. The Road to Shenzhen also received 4th place in a Chinese novel contest and was longlisted for the Maodun Literary Prize.

Here's a description from the book's Amazon page:

It is the early 1990s and Zhou Haonan, an innocent young man from a rural family in China's West Canton Province, travels to the `golden city' of Shenzhen to seek his fortune. Kind and caring but highly ambitious, he works as an international businessman, becomes a Sanda boxing champion and even sells his blood as he spends the next 20 years striving desperately to achieve his dream of a Shenzhen permanent residence permit and a home of his own. Despite a string of humiliating failures and disasters and cruel treatment by the women who enter his life, he somehow manages to get back on his feet and carry on through all the setbacks which life throws at him.

Huang will be a special guest at our event on Wednesday, January 16, which will take place from 7-9pm. Be sure to arrive by 8 if you'd like to be part of the conversation!

Our second January event will take place on Sunday, January 20, from 3:30-6pm. Starting from around 5pm, we'll host a special discussion for interested book lovers, moderated by our very own volunteer Aris.

As usual, our library will be open for checkouts and returns throughout both of this month's events.
