A "world-class cellist"
-----Seiji Ozawa, Conductor
Wang's "technique is astonishing: it's jaw-dropping and seems to take the cello into new, unexplored territory."
-----The Australian
"... this is wonderful imaginative playing, with fine recording picking up a resonant bloom without obscuring details——a 'must' for any collection."
-----BBC Music Magazine
(CD review: Wang Jian plays Bach Cello Suites)
"…the duo of Augustin Dumay, and Maria João Pires have found themselves a true soul mate."
-----Gramophone, UK
The remarkable story of Wang Jian began at the age of ten in 1979, when Isaac Stern discovered him in China while filming the Academy Award-winning documentary From Mao to Mozart. During the decade that followed, Wang Jian went to the United States and studied at Yale University and the Juilliard School. Isaac Stern remained Wang's friend until his death in 2001.
Wang is famous in China as well as in the West. The collaboration with a great number of renowned artists and orchestras has taken him to be on stage at many worlds' top music venues including the Berlin Philharmonie, the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Vienna Musikverein, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Wang is also an acclaimed guest at many international music festivals such as the BBC Proms and the Ishikawa Festival.
Wang Jian plays a rare 1622 A&H Amati, graciously loaned to him by the family of the lat Mr. Sau-Wing Lam.
