Smelling the Sea at Shenzhen's Beach Resorts

I want to meet some new friends

Ya know, reading such a glowing article about Shenzhen's beaches almost made me forget what the actual reality is. Incredibly crowded and horrifically filthy, these beaches probably are fit for more scientific analysis than recreation...and by that I mean, someone should be checking the water for fecal bacteria content, which I would be willing to bet is far, far, above levels safe for swimmers. Never mind the fact that in order to "take a relaxing dip in the sea" you need to first navigate through wave after wave of styrofroam containers and plastic bags. When will the Shenzhen government spend the money necessary to clean these beaches up to their former glory?
