Hey guys,
I graduate from an American university next month as a mechanical engineer and its time to decide on what I want to do after graduation. One of my job offers requires that I travel to Shenzhen for 6 months out of the year, the pay is decent, but I am not sure if Shenzhen would be right for me. I think it could be a really neat experience but at the same time, it could be a horrible one.
I have been trying to find info about the city online but I am having a hard time finding anything. What I do find is 4+ years old and only mentions the city’s prostitution problems.
Could someone point me to a site with relevant info?
Are there many 21ish year old English speaking people in the city?
What does everyone do for fun?
Basically anything you feel like telling me would be extremely helpful, I do not know too much as of now.
Thanks!

Shenzhen is not that much
Shenzhen is not that much fun. It's much more fun in Hongkong or Shanghai. and, so many old guys in clubs. hahahaha hongkong got more pretty girls tho... but a good thing is everything's dirt cheap here, including liquors and electronic stuff.
More and more people from
More and more people from around the world are coming to Shenzhen. Is it the most fun place in the world? It can be. It depends on the person really and on other factors. Like sumonostp said, Hong Kong is a lot of fun, and you probably know, Shenzhen shares a border with it, so if you have a multi-entry visa, you can go to Hong Kong when you want to. I'm not saying you need to leave Shenzhen for fun. There are many good things to do here. So many things are cheap here ranging from electronics, massages, karaoke, trips to beautiful parks, malls, karaoke, and clubs and bars. There are also many people that speak english here that you can meet through this website and a few others. Some expats living abroad and some local people. The english speaking community here is a little, in my opinion, not very organized. I lived in Beijing and there it was a lot easier to meet english speakers from abroad but it still is doable here. You just need to know where to look. If you are worried about that, planning where you live in Shenzhen will be a very important decision. Shekou is probably the best part of Shenzhen for the foreigner who wants to live the most comfortably in terms of being around lots of other expats. I think the biggest concentration of foreigners are there. Also, you can find a lot of the food you miss from home and there are some decent bars there too.
If anyone thinks somewhere else is better, please say what you think. :)
Feel free to ask anything else you might want to know.
Oh and there are older guys that hang in the bar here, but whatever, don't focus on that, just have a good time. :) It's a difference in culture, learn to accept it. Just drink some liquor and roll some dice with the ladies;)

Congrats on your impending
Congrats on your impending graduation!
There are plenty of young professionals in Shenzhen to hang out with, and plenty of bars and clubs, or if you prefer museums and temples.
If you want a slightly less Chinese experience head out to Shekou which is where most of the foreigners hang out and live.
Only real way to find out about Shenzhen is to actually come and visit!
Thanks for the feedback
Thanks for the feedback guys! I know that I would have a visa that would enable travel to Hong Kong, the company has a routine system in place already, I wouldn’t be the first person they are sending over that’s for sure. As for where I would be living, they pay for us to stay in the Capital Plaza, but I really don’t know any more then that. I would be in Shenzhen for 6 months out of the year, and honestly the more I keep finding out about the travel the better this offer sounds.
Well.. I'm not saying
Well.. I'm not saying shenzhen is a bad place to visit. I'm just saying it's not as much fun as hongkong. well they're nxt to each other.
if you are asking GOOD or BAD, then i'd say it's relative. it really depends on your preference tho. if you like to hav fun, u'll find a lotta other places that are more fun than shenzhen, for sure. but if you like to work rather than having fun, then you'd do just fine in shenzhen. I think shenzhen is more like a working city.
but the good thing about china is the McD has got pies in other flavours than apple. TARO pies are makin me fat, man. =)
one thing, i should mention, "BEWARE THIEVES" i got my money stolen without me noticing it the other day. i figured, they must be pretty good. in fact, most of my friends in shenzhen have the same kinda experience. so, people, please keep ur money in your underwear, close to ur most sensitive organ. hahaha just kiddin =)
overall, i'd rate shenzhen, 7 out of 10.
actrally there are lots of
actrally there are lots of English speaking people in Shenzhen, and the ratio is maybe the same as in BJ and Shanghai.
