Hi there,
Here is China, and you have to accept that you will seldom understand all of what's going on, as far as middleman vs. factory goes.
We do quality control here for some importers, so we often go in the factories... I have seen so many things I didn't imagine before. e.g. an importer buys from a HK trader, who sub-contracts to a Chinese factory, which itself sub-contracted to another factory (the trader knew nothing about it).
Sourcing in China is risky at the beginning. You'll have to trust people. You can visit the factories they show you, and see what kind of product they can make, but you'll never know for sure whether this precise factory is the one they will use (unless you go/send a QC inspector there regularly to check the semi-finished products).
But first, why do you want to go with the manufacturer directly? Just for the price? Be careful, some factories are very disorganized. And some of them will have to go through an agent anyway, for the export licence.
All right, we could write books about this subject, it's so complex. If you just remember one thing, it's this: forget about the buyer's pride to "buy direct from the manufacturer".
Good luck.
Ren

I could not agree more with REN's comment. Its very hard to start an export company here, need to do full research and actually get ripped off a few times just to get the experience out of it. Especially when you are an expat yourself. My suggestion is you find some one local that you trust to work together.
Myself runs a small IPO office sourcing for international businesses. Its hard but its FUN doing it. And the reward is awesome!

Dear Kris lee,
You are right on track. If the manufacturer you seek has got a lot of products in his line which do not have relevance then please undestand that he outsources few of them notin his product base too. I have a process which is solely meant for me which will help me find out who the manufacturer is.
If you are interested i am willing to source you the product at the best price.

Ren,
Good writing, 100% agree with your opinion.
Most of factories can not communicate well in English and they are very stubborn with their ideas and hard to follow international business ways even though another local, which is trustfull for them help them and teach them what we want.
They frequently made mistakes and it's risky for you to make any business with them if you hardly speak chinese.
However, good luck is always different from person to person. So I just can say " Good Luck" to you or you'd better off follow these people advises.

The language is not the real problem, because the sales can speak english.
The main apoint is "trust", and find a reliable company which has it own factory is very important. But it need takes some time to make sure of it.

Before you trust a factory or a person, you need to learn and check whether it is worthy to be trusted. It is not a short time.
You can find a agent,a real manufacturer, and a buyer to get different suggestion and judge. When you come to China, visit factory. From actual checking, you can decide it is real factory or not. Also you have the idea that whether the factory or agent is very important for your need.
Generally, big buyer needs to inspect the factory ,not just on the price.
If the manufacturer's address on website is only in Futian,Luohu,Yantian district, generally is only a office for trading(Futian also has some small factories there).Long gang,Bao'an are the factories place(I dont know much about Nanshan). In electronic industry, one factory can't make many kinds of products.half from making, half from purchasing from other factories.
English is only a tool for communicating. Many of factories have their own foreign trader who can communicate very well with foreigners.
Finally, I don't agree Ren's comment (Many shenzhen factories can export even if without export license. But it is important? Moreover, going with manufacturer is only for the price?)
