"AT least 18 people had been killed and 155 injured by yesterday as hailstones, lashing rain and gales pounded Guangdong Province.
Storms packing winds of up to 164 km per hour lashed Guangzhou, Foshan, Dongguan and Zhongshan, causing about 55 million yuan (US$8.4 million) in direct economic losses, said China Central Television, quoting the Civil Affairs Ministry.
Nearly 22 million people were affected by the storms, which dumped more than 50 millimeters of rain on China’s booming export manufacturing base. At least 45 houses collapsed in the storms.
Most of the victims were killed when strong winds brought down walls and other structures. Falling debris also claimed several lives.
The Guangdong Provincial Government has initiated emergency plans to rush the injured to hospital, provide aid to the elderly and inspect endangered buildings."
