Where to buy western cold cuts in Shenzhen/Hong Kong??

We want to buy western cold cut meats (ham, turkey, chicken, roast beef) to make good sandwiches.

Also, how about good western sausages, british bangers, or american hot dogs we can locate?

Where is a store in Shenzhen or Hong Kong that carries this?

We would really like to find the brands: "Boar's Head" , "Eckrich", "National Hebrew", or "Nathan's Famous", for meats and sausages, hot dogs, if anyone knows.

Thanks,
aoilondon

I have never seen Boar's

I have never seen Boar's head, Hebrew National, or Nathans brand hot dogs and meats in Shenzhen, Beijing, or Hong Kong, but, actually I believe there are a few Nathan's food court type restaurants in Beijing. That doesn't help you finding that kind of stuff here. This does. Hong Kong will have the most variety for you. Many different brands coming from all over the place.

I suggest the supermarket City Super. There are many of them all over HK. Huge selection of deli meats and Cheeses. Really, you can go to many of the supermarkets and they'll have some cold cuts and international items.

In Shenzhen there are some places you can go. Ole' supermarket located in the MixC mall(Da Ju Yuan subway stop) and soon to open near Window of the World later this year. They have so much international stuff, but they are a bit more expensive and can sometimes be annoying if you want to use a credit card. They sometimes are strict and ask you have a passport with you.

Speaking of needing a passport. You can go to Metro. A German company that is similar to Costco or Sam's Club. Membership requires you to have your own business but if you are a foreigner, all you need is to bring your passport the first day and they'll make you a free card. They have lots of Italian salami and other cold cuts. Also great place to get fresh spices like oregano and mint leaves. Located in Nanshan district on ShaHe Lu East, right next to IKEA(who actually sell decent hot dogs at their little cafeteria near the cash registers).

Jusco (Ji Zhi Dao) is a Japanese supermarket with a deli counter of foreign meets and cheeses located somewhere near the meat section of there store. There are at least 3 of them that I know of in Shenzhen. One in Coco Park mall(Gou Wu Gong Yuan subway), another in the Citic Plaza(Ke Xue Guan subway), and finally the new one in Coastal City.

Carrefourre (Jia Le Fu)has a growing and growing selection of foreign foods. Once in a while they go nuts and a bunch of ham and salami rolls on in but when it runs out the next batch might not be back for a while. Located in the Central Walk Mall(Zhong Xin Cheng) at the Exhibition Center Subway stop(Hui Zhan Zhong Xin in Chinese). There is also a few others, but the other one I know is in the new Coastal City mall. Near the Book City. I could check which bus goes there for ya if you want, but there is no subway going there(yet).

Charlie's USA Store is probably best for your needs. In terms of variety, I hold Metro, Ole, and Charlie's almost at a tie. It is a small market carrying only foreign foods, almost all imported from Hong Kong or gotten from suppliers probably from Guangzhou. Charlie's has two locations, not counting one that might be in Dong Guan(kind of far from what I consider the main part of Shenzhen). One is in Futian in the Central Walk Mall but this one is really small and carries less products. I suggest you go to the one in SheKou. Again, no subway(yet). Either bus, taxi, or your own car are required. I suggest taking bus 113. It seems the fastest to me. I believe the bus stop name is Hai An Shi Jie. Once there, ask any foreigner living there and they'll point you to it. I'll just confuse you explaining it here:)

Silver Palate is another small market like Charlies. It is right next to Charlie's. Differences between the two are that at SP you can use almost any credit card, but at Charlie's only Chinese bank cards or cash. At SP I also think it cost a little more for their stuff, and also, Charlie's has a lot more things. I always end up going to both places.

I'm not sure about the other locations, but the Park N Shop in Shekou next to Silver Palate has a good selection of cheeses and some cold cuts.

ham - City Super(HK), Ole, Jusco, Carrefourre, Metro, Charlie's, SP, PNShop(HK&SZ)

Turkey - City Super(HK), Ole, Jusco, Carrefourre, Metro,
Charlie's, SP, PNShop(HK&SZ)

Roast beef - I never see it anywhere. Except at three places. The two Subway the sandwich shops located in shekou and in the Central Walk mall, and in NYPD Pizza in one of their Sandwiches.

Chicken City Super(HK), Charlie's(maybe), SP(maybe), PNShop(HK)

Sausages - depends on what you mean. Italian Sausages and that sort of thing - City Super(HK), Ole, Metro, Charlie's, SP, PNShop(HK). there are a bunch of Chinese ones you can try. One I like is the Harbin Sausage. To me it tastes like Kielbasa.

British bangers - No idea what this is. Will have to google it later:) I would guess City Super(HK), Charlie's, SP, PNShop(HK)

American hotdogs - City Super(HK), Metro(maybe), Charlie's(oscar mayer, SP, PNShop(HK) - Jusco, and Carrefoure carry hormel hot dogs but I don't like them. The Carrefourre in Coastal City actually has some german looking ones.

you can go to shekou... they

you can go to shekou... they have a few hong kong type foreign food shops. Also there is a great butcher right next door to McCawleys in shekou

the other shops are small but have a good selection of what you want. It is near the ferry terminal

they have all kinds of meat

So now I know what bangers

So now I know what bangers are:) British Sausage. Maybe Hong Kong, Charlie's, or SP could have'em but another alternative is to try making them:) Here is a recipe I found. Good Luck!

RECIPE BY: Mille® ™

Enjoy these savoury sausages as part of a hearty breakfast, or serve traditional "Bangers 'n Mash" for dinner. Chef’s Incredible Tip: After you thoroughly wash and rinse the sausage casings, soak them in pineapple juice for 24-36 hours (in the fridge) and then rinse them again prior to stuffing them. This process softens the casings and makes them much more tender and palatable!

Ingredients

* 1/2 lb ground lean pork
* 1/2 lb lean ground veal or lamb
* 6 ounces suet
* fresh breadcrumb, made from 3 slices of white bread,including
crust
* 1 teaspoon seasoning salt
* 1/2 teaspoon lemon pepper
* 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
* 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
* 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
* 1/8 teaspoon mace
* 1/8 teaspoon dried thyme
* 1/8 teaspoon dried marjoram
* 2 teaspoons dried sage
* 2 teaspoons onion powder
* 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon, rind of
* 1 large egg
* prepared hog casings (can't get sausage casings, shape the
sausage mixture into patties instead of link sausages)

Directions

1. Knead together the pork, veal, fat, and bread.
2. Stir the salt, pepper, cayenne, nutmeg, mace, thyme, marjoram, sage, onion powder and lemon peel into the egg, and then knead into the meat mixture.
3. CHEF'S NOTE: At this point, I fry a small sausage patty and taste it so that I can adjust the seasonings, because the recipe so far is fairly mild.
4. Firmly stuff the mixture into the prepared hog (sausage) casings.
5. Prick any air pockets with a pin.
6. Poach, broil, grill, or fry them before serving.
7. Serve the bangers, drowned in nice thick onion and mushroom gravy, with a heap of mashed potatoes.
8. The raw sausages can be refrigerated for 3 days, cooked sausages for 1 week.
9. They can also be frozen (raw, poached, or broiled) for 3 months.

Eating some delicious fresh

Eating some delicious fresh sliced turkey from Silver Palate. I hope I can make this last for a while, but it's sure gonna be hard. Real nice. And if you want to try a slice before you buy, just ask. Really friendly people there. :)
