Seperate Lives when together

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

A Western friend who has had a Chinese girl friend for 6 years would like to know from other Chinese people what is the accepted behaviour in China for a relationship. The girl goes on dinner dates with her friends, the friend or friends of the girl are not known to the man. There is no invitation to the man to join the dinner date. When the man asks why she wants to go without him she answers that she has her friends and he has his friends. In actual fact she has her friends and his friends are common to both. Her friends are exclusive to her. Is this situation acceptable in a Chinese relationships? If the couple were both Chinese would the man be expected to accept this?
