Safety Concerns in Shenzhen

In my opinion you have nothing to worry about at all. All countries and citys have there problems. but in my personal experience I dont feel shenzhen is unsafe at all. I walk the streets all times of the day and nights, there are many single girls, familes, kids and everyone who walks around at night with no worries. Just like everywhere in the world, you just need to be vigilant and be aware and stay away from shit areas. There are petty things that happen with pick pocket and stuff but i found in my experience this happens to people who are careless and not watching there stuff. But if you in Nanshan, you will feel fine, dont worry at all. I live in Nanshan and its a great place to stay, most people wouldnt even bother you at all. Everyone just minds there own business.

Thanks for the feedback. I do feel better about the move to Shenzhen... I just don't understand why family members who live & work in Shenzhen/Hong Kong are exaggerating how unsafe the city is. This misunderstanding has caused an unnecessary rift between myself & my parents. At the present moment... they feel I will be kidnapped and have my organs stolen and it is completely stressing me out!

Shenzhen is definitely a safe place. If u live in nan shan, thats would be safe for sure.

what u need to do is to stay away from  shit area and keep an eye on your stuff when u r hanging out with friends.

Im chinese and shenzhen is really a nice city

those people who have bad impression of shenzhen maybe still think shenzhen just like the 90s 20 century,but shenzhen have developed so many years which is not like before.the city is clean,beautiful and safe.so don't worry and enjoy your life here

I think Shenzhen is a safy city.I have live in Shenzhen for 7 years and didn't meet any crimes.

Not that I've ever lived in Shenzhen much less been there (but i may move there pretty soon!) I do have experience in this

...when I was moving to China from Canada six years ago my gf at the time was from Hong Kong and was deathly afraid of me moving to the mainland..she'd only ventured as far as Shenzhen to visit relatives and was convinced it was a dirty, horrible place full of thieves and murderers.

..after making some inquiries i found out that Shenzhen did have a pretty bad reputation quite a few years ago but in recent years has cleaned up a lot and is no more unsafe than any other place in China..and I consider China to be a very safe place to live.. too bad Shenzhen is still plagued by the stereotype's of the 90's!
