Shenzhen is one of China’s most successful economic zones and is one of the major cities in the province of Guangdong, China. It is a place of foreign investment, a major financial center, and home to numerous high tech companies and banks. It is a fast growing city, and home to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. For 2011, Shenzhen will be host to the 26th Summer Universiade. For the Bid selections and venues, the five contenders were Shenzhen in China, Poznan in Poland, Kazan in Russia, Murcia in Spain, and Kaohsiung in Taiwan. The choice was made back in 2007, where FISU announced Shenzhen as the hosting city. To date, Shenzhen is the youngest to host a universiade, having been established as a city just 26 years ago.
For Universiade in Shenzhen 2011, it has been reported that 12 stadiums and gyms will be built in the districts of Futian, Luohu, and Nanshan. In the Longgang district, an International Olympic Center will be established. The features are a main stadium with 60,000 seating capacity, and 18,000-seat gym, and a 13.4 square kilometer park with facilities.
The Start date and time will be on August 13, 2011 at 1:00 in the afternoon. The End date and timewill be on August 23, 2011 and the closing ceremonies will be at 11:00 in the evening. The following are the compulsory sports for the 2011 Shenzhen Unviersiade: Aerobics, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Men’s Beach Volleyball, Women’s Beach Volleyball, BMX, Chess, Diving, Fencing, Men’s Football, Women’s Football, Golf, Artistic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Open Water, Men’s Water Polo, Women’s Water Polo, Tennis, Judo, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Track Cycling, Road Cycling, Mountain Bike, Sailing, Shotgun, Sport-shooting, and Weightlifting. All events are scheduled to take place from August 13 until August 22, 2011. The closing ceremonies will be held on August 23, 2011.
The various venues for the competitions are as follows: Universal Center Gym, Luohu Gym, Longgang Sports Center, Shenzhen Foreign Language School Gym, Conference and Exhibition Center Pavilions, Shenzhen Sport School, Shenzhen Swimming and Diving Gym, Mission Hills Golf Club, Yuanping Gym, Shenzhen Polytechnic Gym, Multi-Purpose Sports Gym of Yantian district, Longgang Tennis Center, Shenzhen Tennis Center, Futian Sports Park Gym , Football Pitch 1 and 2 of Shenwanyi Road , Shenzhen Shooting Hall and Clay-pigeon Shooting Field , Shenzhen Sea Water Sports Base & Navigational Marine Sports School, Qixing Bay, Bao’an District Gym, and the Universiade Center Gym.
