For 2011, Shenzhen will be host to the 26th Summer Universiade. For the Bid selections and venues, the five contenders were the cities of Shenzhen in China, Poznan in Poland, Kazan in Russia, Murcia in Spain, and Kaohsiung in Taiwan. The choice was made back in 2007, where FISU announced Shenzhen as the hosting city. To date, Shenzhen is the youngest to host a universiade, having been established as a city 26 years on. It is an excellent contender being one of China’s most successful economic zones and one of the major cities in the province of Guangdong.
It has been reported that 12 stadiums and gyms will be built in the districts of Futian, Luohu, and Nantian. In the Longgang district, an International Olympic Center will be built for the Universiade in Shenzhen 2011,. The features are a main stadium with 60,000 seating capacity, and 18,000-seat gym, and a 13.4 square kilometer park with facilities. The Start date and time will be on August 13, 2011 and the opening ceremonies will begin at 1:00 in the afternoon. The End date and time will be on August 23, 2011 at 11:00 in the evening. The basketball games will be held at the Universal Center Gym, Luohu Gym, Longgang Sports Center, Shenzhen Foreign Language School Gym, and the Universiade Center gym. The Judo and Taekwondo competitions will be held on August 13 to 17, 2011 at the Conference and Exhibition Center Pavilions. The weightlifting competitions will be held in the Comprehensive Training Hall and Weightlifting Training Hall of the Shenzhen Sport School. The Diving Competition will be held from August 16 to 22 at the Shenzhen Swimming and Diving Gym. The golf tournament will be held on August 17 through 20 at the Mission Hills Golf Club. The Volleyball competition will be held from August 13 to 22 for the men’s and women’s division at the Yuanping Gym, Shenzhen Polytechnic Gym, and Multi-Purpose Sports Gym of Yantian district. The Tennis tournaments will be held starting August 14 till 21 at the Longgang Tennis Center and Shenzhen Tennis Center. The Aerobic Gymnastics competition will be held from August 20 to 22 at the Futain Sports Park Gym. The archery competition will be held on August 14 to 18 at the Football Pitch 1 and 2 of Shenwanyi Road. The shooting competition will be from August 18 to 22 at the Shenzhen Shooting Hall and Clay-pigeon Shooting Field. The swimming competition is scheduled on August 14 to 19 at the Universiade Center Aquatic Center and open waters of the Seven Star Bay.
