China is known to be one of the world’s most populous countries. It is also home to many industrial companies, and the fast growing economy is what lures investors to engage in business there. China business etiquettes are important if you want to make a good impression and land a good business deal, or get hired. There are many tips in dealing with business in China that can be of help if you want your transaction to be a success. First of all, you should have already established knowledge of the Chinese culture. Knowing the vision, mission, and objectives, and the profile of the company is also a plus.

Business etiquettes in China include dressing appropriately. Your appearance is one of the first things that will make an impression to your future business partner or employer. For Chinese people, they prefer that you wear conservative suits or corporate attire. For women, wearing high-heeled shoes must be avoided. The preferred colors for business attire are neutral colors or earth tones. For business meetings, jeans should not be worn. For interviews, casual attire is accepted, but should still be conservative.

Being punctual is very important. It immediately creates an impression that you are a responsible and disciplined person. For the duration of the meeting or interview, certain behaviors that you show will definitely leave an impression to the employers or businessmen that you are dealing with. When talking, avoid large or exaggerated hand gestures. It can be very distracting to the listener, so just let your mouth do the talking. Do not point your finger to any person or to any direction when speaking. Instead, use an open palm to make simple gestures to keep your listener interested in what you are saying.

If you are attending a banquet or having a lunch or dinner meeting, you should always remember not to eat ahead of the host or employer. For women, it is advised that you do not drink alcoholic beverages at all. There may be several courses for the meal, so make sure that you eat in small amounts. You should also have a taste for every meal that is offered to you, as a sign of respect to the host. Do not finish all of your meals as it may imply that you are still hungry and that you did not receive enough food. This can be very insulting to the Chinese. Should a conversation occur during meals, it is a proper gesture to bow or nod, to show that you are listening and comprehending what is being talked about.

Always be prepared when engaging in business deals or job interviews. Prepare multiple copies of all the necessary documents that might come in handy during this time. When giving out your business cards, it is recommended that you bring it in a card case, rather than just getting it out from your pocket or wallet.
